Small and medium-sized enterprises value practice-oriented consulting

Up to some years ago corporate consultants were rarely found in small and medium businesses. Even “Süddeutsche Zeitung” recently had in its title the “unconvinceables” – companies that do not employ consultants to avoid the confession of their own incompetence.

A study project of the German Institute for Small and Midsized Enterprises in Berlin presents results that prove the opposite: According to this small and medium-sized enterprises consider consultants as necessary and required support. There are many good reasons for the employment of consultants: specialised expertise is needed, bottlenecks in time and resources need to be bridged and routines or routine-blindness have to be inquired. Particularly at companies of a business volume of more than 10 million euro a renunciation of the reserve in consulting is evident. The reason for this is high pressure of innovation and internationalization in a globalised world economy.

Small and medium sized consulting companies benefit from this development, because they are talking the language of their clients, originate from the business practise and have a distinctive focus on implementation. This is decisive, because their clients will not appreciate studies and reports. Demanded is attendance in implementation besides strategy and process consulting.

Here innovative types of consulting and mentoring are needed that are particularly offered by small consulting companies. These meet customer demands by networking along the whole value added chain.
