Vital High Performance Teams-The creative way to Team Excellence

A data collection of the renowned Gallup Institute shows that those companies are the most powerful, whose employees have an opportunity every day to do what they do best. In this respect, companies should be aware of the natural talents of their staff and encourage talents to be converted into strengths. That sounds simpler than the requirements in the implementation really are.

To find out the talents of employees is, supported by various testing procedures, quite uncomplicated. But, how to handle the talents and strengths of the employees? The range of tasks and functions in teams are limited. So how to leverage the employees according to their preferences, without losing sight of the goal of successful operating teams in terms of a common achievement of objectives? Given these issues, it seems at first glance to be more simple to treat all employees equal, under the motto "We are a team." The consequence wil however be, that Team Excellence remains a foreign word. A DIHT survey (1993) describes the misery: "A European engineer is better than a Japanese, but a team of Japanese engineers is much better than a European."

What are high-performance teams characterized by? Top teams have clarified the strengths of all team members . Based on the individual preferences each team member plays his part in the team in accordance with his role. The willingness to support his teammates is very high. The common objectives provide the framework for tackling the tasks. A high degree of common responsibility allows an open and direct communication. The adaptability to environmental an situational changes is extremely strong.

A challenge of excellent leadership is, to entrust employees according to their skills and preferences with the respective tasks in the team. Only the bundling of all forces in teams enables high performance. And in the course of consistent focus on high-performance the work efficiency and job satisfaction will raise.
